About Percussion Equipment

What do you guys/gals think are good heads, drum brands, and other related things?  Myself, I like Zildjian, but in reality, I haven't really tried the others that much.  Also, I like Pearl, but that's only cause I haven't looked around.

Anyway, what are also some good tips on maintaining equipment?  For instance, how do you go about tuning?
