I’ve played all of the non-MMO and sequels, and VI is probably the best one, but IX is my favorite. The plot to FF7 is a little too similar to VI, so that might be why I didn’t think VII was as big a deal as others.

In my opinion, While VII is overrated, I can't deny the fact it's a good game. But, VI, IX and even VIII Blow it outta the water.

It’s definitely a solid game, and it’s easy to pick up and play, it’s definitely overrated. Most of its popularity is because it was the first JRPG to get really popular. Also a lot of people’s first JRPG, so it made a big impact on them, despite it really didn’t do anything new in the franchise.

First in the FF series, it’s hardly the first 3D RPG on the PS1.

There’s two King’s Field games that were 3D first person games, Persona had 3D first person dungeons, and Wild Arms had 3D battles. It’s popular misconception that FF7 was the first 3D RPG, and the first PS1 RPG, neither of which are true.

Personally I think FF12 was the first “true” 3D FF game.

Technically you're right. Since battles take place with full character input moving in the whole arena. My bad on the little misconception.

I meant more with FF12 having full 3D environments and a camera you control. It’s actually kind of shocking how many RPG’s didn’t have that, even into the PS3 and 360’s life.
