Sorry Fanta, I'm forgetful and you haven't been super active in a while. Partly I forgot you were a girl and partly I wasn't paying attention to who's post it was.

And Sam, isn't the idea of lossless formats that they sound the same as a wav or flac file but they're smaller?

The idea of lossless files is that there's no data loss (which would result in potential sound loss and/or loss of clarity/definition). A .wav file would actually be smaller than a lossless file. (A .flac file is lossless, as Grungie said.) Data loss naturally occurs when you convert from a lossless format to a non-lossless format.

A .wav file (unless, for some dumb reason, you convert from lossless to .wav) generally doesn't result in data loss...because no one tends to convert to .wav files. I mean, that would kind of defeat the purpose of having the file as .wav.

Oh, I thought .flac were uncompressed also. How would a .wav file be smaller if its uncompressed?

Also the way you're talking about it is confusing me a bit. Digital studio recordings are done in .wav aren't they? So any music file started as a .wav and then possibly got compressed into something else? I guess technically its a protools project file or whatever first, but the Master render would be to a .wav?

I may be completely wrong about that, but thats the impression that I'm under.

I'm pretty sure flac is smaller than wav. Though I'm judging from personal experience

Well, it used to be a thing that everyone would render their final product as a .wav file, because that's what typically went on CDs. Nowadays, with services like bandcamp and spotify and such, a lot of people render files as whatever they want. CDs still tend to have .wav files. Any DAW (Digital Audio Workspace) worth its salt has the option to render as just about any music file type you wish.
