They did. It basically covered the first "book". And it wasn't that great, honestly.

Well, I mean, it wasn't terrible. But it also wasn't very memorable. It isn't really a book that is easily made into a movie, especially since not everyone has read it. This isn't LotR or well-known DC/Marvel comic book characters here, right?

Yeah, the film was advertised quite a bit, but it came off as an attack of the clones/avatar rip off with bits of planet of the apes and it was critically unsuccessful by and large, so I don't think it helped the books.
