I've applied to about twenty places in the last year and still not a single call back. I'm aware though that only twenty in one year means I'm not trying hard enough, and a few of those I went about the wrong way (showing up after school instead of early in the morning, at one place I had to go out to the car to get something >_>). Several places have told me I have to apply online rather than at the location (so I can hand it directly to the manager) which means you are automatically ignored. For most of those I was presentable though; I guess the fact that I have zero work experience doesn't help. I'm actually pretty ashamed of myself after this thread lol.

I worked at a butchers over summer and up to january, by which time I'd had enough of being treated like shit and stinking of blood. Plus it gave me terrible anxiety, so I was forgetful and clumsy and just generally bad at it because of my constant state of panic. On top of that, the pay was below minimum wage and as it took my whole Saturday, it really wasn't worth it.

So yeah, not for me.

Before that though, I volunteered in a small local guitar shop, which was great. It was really quiet, so occasionally a bit dull but me and my colleague (who became a good friend of mine) got to play around with instruments, so it was all good

I'm a Pomology/Horticulture lecturer at a university/college. I teach mostly second and third year students.

Hey don't sweat it

A guy I know who is a manager at a grocery store told me to fill out an application (cuz you have to) so he could give me a job. So I applied and never got a call.

Doesn't get worse than that :p

Dude, I'm pretty sure there was an implied transaction of bodily fluids implied there. No wonder you didn't get it when you're not being observant for subtle queus (sp?) like that.

The manager was still a douche, though.

I toss pizzas into the air and tell people what to do.

It's a glamorous life let me tell you.

I also do band things on the side. Going to college for teaching though.

That manager sounds like a prick, as In Cognition said, unless there's some other reason we're not aware of.

I actually want some advice on something. I am going to Utah for a week (maybe just a few days) in June to visit people and to work on a house. I am wondering if I should just wait to get a job after that. I've filled out quite a few applications that say something along the lines of: "At *company name*, we believe vacation time is earned. You will not be granted any vacation time until after working for this company for two years, and you will be allowed no more than five personal days."

I don't think it would go down well if I asked for that time off after a few months of working. I could bring it up during an interview (this is predetermined) and if their reaction is 'fuck off' I'll just accept the decline and apply somewhere else later.

Slippy-esque anger at society rant: I absolutely despise that attitude. I think if you work you deserve a week off and a few days scattered throughout the year. I once read that 24% of Americans get zero vacation time.

Yeah, I always had to hunt down people willing to work for me, which was a bitch and a half when there were only like 5 people qualified to cover some of my shifts, but that was even with my employer allowing me to just find a sub.

It does kinda suck, but having been continuously employed since my sophomore year of high school, I kinda just learned that vacations are for old rich people or people who haven't started working yet.

I don't care that much, but in this case it's predetermined so I guess I just have to wait a few months before working. I feel so guilty just sitting here not working (my 18th birthday was a couple of days ago if that gives you an idea of how despicable this is).

But even if I don't care that much I feel like it's something that needs to change in our society. I mean one week, nothing that outrageous.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sta...by_country

Since our countries really aren't that different from each other (standard of living and human rights wise), this would be one of the more valid arguments some of the Europeans on UG could use against the US, since people always have to turn things into that sort of debate.

Edit: A couple of other points since I'm still thinking about this.
1. I don't mean so we can go on vacation. I just mean leave in general so you can pursue whatever it is you want in that time.
2. The 25% who get no paid leave are the same people with no health benefits, etc.
