I never heard of the long nails thing before, usually people keep their nails short.

I keep my right hand's nails long for guitar. For a lot of classical and flamenco techniques you pretty much need to have long nails unless you want it to sound awful and feel awkward. This is why I get annoyed with rock guitarists who insist that it's stupid and you can play anything with a pick and that you wouldn't need nails to play 'boring old fingerpicking music' (I'm actually thinking of two specific individuals >_>).
Edit: Singing and playing at the same time is mostly just hard when I don't know the lyrics.
Yeah, for classical guitar, it's pretty much necessary to have long nails.
Or so, according to my teacher.

Oh okay, I don't know anything about classical.

I keep mine really short because fuck fretting with long nails, and tapping with your picking hand with them. I also hate long nails while playing piano. Something about them hitting the keys is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Just makes me shiver.
I don't think I could play classical guitar because I dislike having long nails so much.

Also I really truly hate dinner parties. They make me feel so old.

For me playing and singing is first of all about actually knowing about how both parts go, but then figuring out how the rhythms go together. Once you get that down you've pretty much got it.
I've never grown out my nails, but I've also never played classical guitar. I feel like I'd be bad at it. I'm pretty decent at fingerpicking as long as I can remember the pattern, but nails seem like they'd be weird. Also they look kinda gross once they get too long.

What pisses me off is that at work my hands are almost always wet (because washing/cleaning) and for some reason after work my nails either look longer, or actually are. |
