Is it actually worth buying? I'm always hesitant to buy "comeback albums".

Lol, yeah, it's pretty great, although I haven't listened to it in ages.
I do think Been Away Too Long is a bit weak, and Attrition isn't up to par with the rest of it but apart from that I don't think they could have possibly made a better comeback. Actually, I was wanting more stuff like the ending of Worse Dreams. Just pure beautiful chaos. I mean how fucking cool was this clip. I'm not sure I've heard anything else like it. It's like an aggressive yet poppy shoegazing that feels both chaotic and precise. Edit: @Sam well why not hear it before you buy it?
I wouldn't consider it a comeback album, it's really just a continuation from Down on the Upside and imo feels like a natural progression.
I was really hesitant about it at first like you were, but I enjoyed it. Not their best album, but still solid. Really, it's kind of hard for a band to release their best album after reforming. The only exception to this, imho, is Alice in Chains' 2012 album.

Don't you mean AiC's 2013 album?
Though for King Animal, I would say it's better than Down on the Upside since that album suffered from a lot of filler and feels more concise.

Didn't get enough sleep all weekend, 'cause I was at a conference and had to get up early every day. Basically it's one of those albums you go in not having high expectations, but end up feeling satisfied that it's better than you were expecting.

I love me some Down on the Upside. I think it's tied with Superunknown for my favorite. I love when they get all experimental in stuff like Switch Opens and Applebite, and Zero Chance is such a beautiful song. And holy shit, the production. I can see where you get the filler from though.

I'm not a fan of Applebite, but I do agree that Switch Opens and Zero Chance are highlights. I do love Tighter and Tighter and Overfloater.
I'm okay with experimentation, but I personally enjoy an album that's a bit more concise with their sound instead of being all over the place. Those types of albums feel kind of directionless for me. |
