I kind of dislike when people who don't play any kind of instruments talk about what's more musically complex than what, since they're usually wrong. I was having a discussion with someone over Green Day, and the guy was commenting on how Green Day's first album was more musically complex than 21st Century Breakdown.
While Green Day aren't complex by any means, you can definitely agree that the stuff on 21st Century Breakdown has more going on than 1039 Smoothed Out/Slappy Hours, with shifting dynamics, utilizing multiple guitars, some even have time signature changes, and a couple end in a different way from how the song starts.
Despite the first album having a bunch of songs that sound the same, and even use the same drumlines in all the songs, I guess some aspects seem flashier to non-players with the guitar solos, and palm muted riffs. Like in the song Dry Ice or I Wanna Be Alone
