There is a false stereotype that the bass is easier. Why do you think I say that is the case? Well, for one thing, all bass guitar parts aren't easy.
What is more a challenge, the guitar or bass?

People think it’s easier because a standard bass has 4 strings, and you don’t really use chords.
Though it depends on the song, as some basslines can put you to sleep, while others are harder than the guitar.

The bass does have chords, you simply plack two notes together, at the least. Anyway, arpeggios are broken chords and it's probably not easy for many people to master.

While it’s technically true that the bass has chords, it’s just not the main focus of the instruments.
Arpeggios aren’t hard to master or to learn. It only feels that way for beginners.

I'd say bass is probably easier to pick up and play but mastery of either will take a lot of years of practice.
I like the creativity of the guitar. I mean, if you got a fuzzbox or even just have an acoustic, you can come up so much cool stuff.
Anyway though, the bass can be just as creative. In fact, I'm sure a lot of cool stuff has been written by bass players.
