Yeah it can, but I can see what you're getting at clearly enough. Some music does something truly new and different, and can be pointed out as something separate. Other music though - like this - simply takes things already there and re-moulds them a bit, maybe adds a minor new element for extra flavour, and make the best of what it's got. Both are equally valid - hell, directly copying a style is still valid, I mean at the end of the day, it's only music, made for enjoyment - but truly new music has that advantage because it doesn't have to compete with similar sounding stuff as much and most (if not all) of its elements are new to the listener. Having a more 'gimicky' approach that uses more common methods can still sounds good if done well - as it is in this album - but it's easier for it grow old on the listener, or simply never capture them at all.
