Yeah, that was one of the things that annoyed me. Things were placed peculiarly, but I guess it was just one of the quirks of the game.
Similarly, the journal was poorly designed IMO, because having to flip through to find an entry on a quest that's buried amongst a billion others is a real pain. The directions were often pretty vague, or sometimes just plain wrong. I think the more modern two took it too far the other way - particularly Skyrim - where there is literally no effort or thought involved in finding things, it just tells you exactly where they are. At least the journal in Morrowind offered player participation and investigation.
