Discuss this wonderful innovation of guitar tremolo construction!
If anyone has any questions about setting up their FR-equipped guitar (particularly setting it up in tunings other than E standard), ask me. I'm fairly knowledgeable after years of setting my FR-equipped guitar up...
Edit:
Here's some pictures and descriptions to reflect how to properly set up a Floyd Rose guitar.
Parts:
Restringing and tuning:
Block off the trem at the cavity. Many people make a simple wood block for this purpose. I've simply taped together several quarters and a few dimes.
Since I've also removed the padding behind the string lock screws (many guitars have padding so you cannot pull up), I also place a screwdriver underneath the string lock screws. This keeps my trem firmly in place while I restring.
Next, place replace the old strings...
To tune...
An important note on retuning:
Setting up the headstock area:
First tighten the retainer bar. This needs to be at an angle lower than the nut level. (Leave enough room to fit strings under there, obviously.) This is done before anything else.
Then, tighten down the string clamp screws with an allen wrench. It helps to place a thin screwdriver head in between the string clamps themselves while tightening, so that the clamps are mostly straight. This is done after you have tuned the guitar. (See "To tune... in the spoiler above).
