It's not really the whole newbie thing, I'm just too used to seeing people use it as a derogatory term as it's inferior quality for being popular and non-anime nerds enjoying it. When you see someone use it like that, you'll know exactly why I hate seeing it used.
Anywho, I think SAO is kind of a crappy series. It has potential, but the storytelling in the anime is pretty bad (especially with the pacing), and the second half of the first season is pretty godawful. The first season is the only show I've actually dropped. I gave the show a second chance when season 2 started up, and it's better, but it still has similar problems like the first season.
It's really a mixed bag tbh, so you'll either love it or hate it. I haven't seen Attack on Titan, but there's more praise for that one, or try A Certain Magical Index, as that's a personal fave of mine.
