Well I think doing something because you think its cool is a little different from what we were talking about originally, but yeah, that is also an issue.
Caring more about the fandom than being a fan.

Yeah, we're not necessarily talking about jumping on a popularity bandwagon, just people who care more about being part of the fandom rather than just being a fan. Like punk fans are more about being punk rather than listening to punk, as when a band gets popular, or does something different, they get rejected by punk fans. It used to be worse in the 80's and early 90's, but some of that shit still lingers.
Also you bringing up Shingeki no Kyojin, it's really annoying when people are really anal over using the Japanese names of anime and then they bitch at others who use the English name. Like god forbid someone wants to say Attack on Titan when they buy merchandise with that written on it, but they're not a "real fan" because they're calling it Attack on Titan instead of Shingeki no Kyojin. Also you get accused for not being a "real fan" when you find out about a show after it comes to the US, as only the cool kids watched the fansubs while it was airing, and noobs watch professional subs. Not accusing you of this, but I get shit for this a lot.

I know a guy who only watched Shingeki No Kyojin simply because all his other anime friends did - I'm sure many others feel the same way because there is no way in hell so many people can actually think Shingeki No Kyojin's any good. >:/None of my friends watch Attack on Titan, but I love it. What now?!

Sorry Sam, you called it Attack on Titan, you don't really love the series.
