RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- Danjo - 11-03-2014 I think being a teenager is just depressing in and of itself. Everyone seems to get depressed to some degree through middle school and high school. RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- JCizzle - 11-04-2014 I strongly believe music can and does influence people in their attitudes and mentalities, especially the easily impressionable such as teenagers and children, who still are trying to find themselves (and let's face it, are, more often than not, dumb). I see it mostly as them being 'posers' (for lack of a neutral term) because they're mostly trying to follow a crowd (which often is the 'outcast' crowd, ironically). Try finding someone who is really into punk rock and isn't an "anarchist" or "libertarian" (quotes intended). Of course, not all punk rock fans (or bands, even) are anarchists, individualists and/or hate the government, but the stereotype sort of exists for a reason -- it reinforces itself, and traditional punk rock at the base is all about anti-establishment and not being able to play your own instrument. Now, as Debbie has insinuated, I don't think everyone is influenced to the point where listening to metal, country, gothic or industrial music 'makes' you depressed or jaded, just how listening to hip-hop, no matter how base, misogynistic and lyrically uninspired it can get, doesn't make you such. We were talking about Wagner and antisemitism -- Wagner obviously was a major influence on Hitler and other powerful Nazis, but despite how much shit they stirred, they were ironically just a handful of people who didn't listen to Wagner while not being dicks. Even then, they were inspired by a very distorted version of Nietzsche's philosophy as told by his Nazi sister, and he was entirely against antisemitism. Some people acting like shit due to being inspired by something doesn't make that something necessarily bad. Point is, music absolutely does influence some people. A lot of music actually helps people, even if it's dark, violent and unethical in its imagery. I'm not sure the issue lies entirely on what it does to people (as I too am often put off by that sort of stuff). In fact, I think it's healthy and right to sometimes look past the imagery and appreciate music for its aesthetic or intellectual value (you may think Schoenberg makes boring, chaotic and unlistenable music, but that the theory behind it is rather interesting). An atheist should be able to listen to gospel music or Stryper and someone who disagrees with communism should still be able to listen to RATM if (s)he enjoys the music. I think that that could be the beginning of tolerance and understanding. And I agree with you, Carl, when you say that a lot of popular music shares similar lyrical themes to hip-hop (barring perhaps how crime is cool), albeit using different lingo. RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- stratman_13 - 11-04-2014 i just think people should listen to whatever they want to. and people can listen to whatever they want to, and that's the beauty of it. an atheist is perfectly capable of enjoying gospel music, a white collar wall street chick is totally capable of enjoying gangsta shit from the late 80s/early 90s, a super-pious individual can love that ridiculous black metal.... you don't have to "be" anything to enjoy a type of music. with that said, though, you have to take a fair bit of music with a grain of salt. with that also said, I also certainly believe that up until a certain age kids really shouldn't listen to some stuff unless they can separate the good and bad in their head. but i also know that some kids are more mature and capable of differentiating between things than others, and that's totally a judgement call on the parents (and hopefully they're good enough to make a correct judgement call) RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- JCizzle - 11-05-2014 Yeah, I agree with everything you said. RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- WCPhils - 11-05-2014 Subcultures around music have always weirded me out. I've never felt like the music I listen to has influenced how I dressed or what I opinions I hold. They're just sounds yo :weed: RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- Danjo - 11-05-2014 For me Phils, I think its more the other way around. People of a certain type tend to listen to certain music. Thats why all of my friends have somewhat similar musical tastes. (My irl friends anyway, you guys are more different.) But yeah, I've never really cared what other people dress like or anything. RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- WCPhils - 11-05-2014 Yea, that actually makes more sense. RE: 2 pÉÂÇÂɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɆ- Danjo - 11-05-2014 Thats logic is pretty much my basis for judging people by their music taste, because it does tell you something about them, just not everything. And also why I would probably not date someone who didn't like the Chili Peppers, because I feel like that would mean they wouldn't really like who I am.
