For me it depends on how the chords are, as some tunings you can't transfer very well to a standard tuning, or if it's an open style chord.

Huh, how would knowing the name of the notes (ex.: "This note is A") not help? Although I can understand wanting to play in the tuning the band uses, sometimes it's more advantageous to know the notes rather than return. Because maybe you're like me, and don't like resetting up your Floyd Rose equipped guitar every time a band uses an odd tuning. So, I can simply learn the notes and not bother. The notes played (and how they're played) are more important than the tuning, anyway.

I'm not doubtful it helps. It's more like I don't know where that knowledge would come in handy since I wouldn't know off-hand without something like a tuner.

In this case, I wouldn't know if that would help me figure out the tuning any quicker. Also, this is only, like, the second or third time I've ever encountered an odd tuning throughout my tabbing history. But I'm always able to match up the notes by ear. It's all I know, after all. So while I'm completely ignorant when it comes to things like chords, note names, scales, and all that stuff, I have good ears to compensate for. So tuning is just like the first stepping stone for me. Usually, anyways.

And I change tunings soo much for soo many different tabs that I don't even use my floyd lel.

That's true. Although, if you work at it, you can sort of fake it in a standard tuning.

RE: 2 pɐǝɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɔ - Grungie - 03-13-2014

That really depends on the song.

RE: 2 pɐǝɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɔ - debbie - 03-13-2014

I prefer to play in standard tuning and transpose all songs that are not in standard into standard if possible.

RE: 2 pɐǝɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɔ - JCizzle - 03-13-2014

Debbie plays in standard?

This is news to me.

RE: 2 pɐǝɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɔ - Grungie - 03-13-2014

Well you play bass, so it's a bit easier to do that. Sometimes when it comes to alternate guitar tunings, depending on how it's played, or what's being played, it's really difficult to transpose it in another tuning.

Pssh, ja. I've got light strings on that doesn't take down tuning well.

Yeah, there are definitely songs with chord shapes that would be impossible to transfer to standard without making it come out like a shitty coffee shop open mic version, haha. I think fingerings on guitar are sometimes important because the same notes do sound different on different strings, and also sometimes its just way easier to play if you can do it the way the original band is.

Thats kinda a ridiculous tuning by the way, only C# and F#.

The UG plus thing is funny because I submitted tabs for songs I wrote my sophomore year or something and they got accepted, so I have it free.

RE: 2 pɐǝɹɥʇ ʎʇıunɯɯoɔ - Hank Hill - 03-13-2014

I was worried I was going to pop my high e string a 3rd time. My poor delicate string. Sad
Not that I needed to change it to that tuning anyways. I just wanted to hear it for myself.

I'd occasionally look into Tab Pro, but it was mostly out of curiosity. Never to learn anything. Plus, there were a lot of GP files that used my tab for the guitars, so in a way, it was like watching my own work, minus the drums, bass, and occasionally vocals.
I remember they tried to keep it like:
3 contributions = 1 month
10 = 3 month
50 = 6
?? = ?!?!

But now it's funny that they don't even care lol.
